Sophie is the first dog I've ever owned myself (I grew up with lots of dogs, though). Sophie was an amazing
find from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Virginia. Since the day I got her, all I could think is, "How
in the hell could anyone let a dog like this go?" Since she was found as a stray, we don't know her exact age,
but figure that she was between a 6 months and a year when I got her. I got Sophie on Dec. 4th, 2001 as a
birthday present to myself.
Sophie is a real "people" dog. She loves people and is always excited to smell someone new, or someone old.
She thinks she's a lap dog and will do her damnest to climb up in my lap when I'm sitting down.
Sophie is pure border collie, as far as anyone can tell. She has the coloring and the shape and certainly
the attitude. Like any border collie, she'll run until she collapses from exhaustion if you let her. But unlike
most border collies, she is incredibly laid back in the home. She will spend a majority of her day lying down.
She loves to run, though and loves to chase or be chased. With a group of dogs, her instincts kick in and she
begins herding. She'll chase after dogs that stray away from a group and try to turn them back towards the
group, barking until they start heading back.
She and my mother's dog, Daisy love to play together. Daisy chases Sophie around and
they jump up and bite each other's necks. I don't know why dogs enjoy this, but they do love it. It's great
exercise for both of them, and may explain why they sleep most of the rest of the day.
Below are some photos of Sophie and some with her and Daisy. Despite the menacing looks in some of the
photos with Daisy, they're actually having fun (as you can see, Daisy is reclining, so obviously not too upset)
